What is Metabolic Balance®?
Metabolic Balance® is a scientifically based healthy eating programme or diet, backed up by 20 years of research by German physicians and nutritionists. It is a four stage weight loss plan for now and the rest of your life. You get to eat three meals a day, made from natural healthy foods that are easily found in local shops and supermarkets. Each person receives an individual weight loss plan devised by one of our expert nutritionists, based on his/her exact nutritional requirements, and these are determined by blood tests taken at the start of the diet process.
As many as 65% of the adult population suffers from obesity and weight related health disorders, which are often caused by poor diets high in refined carbohydrates. Refined carbohydrates such as sugar, pastries, cakes and baked goods made from white flour, are low in protein and lacking in the necessary vitamins and minerals the body needs, so diets high in these sort of foods result in poor nutrition, which in turn disrupts hormone levels and your metabolism, leading to weight gain and other health issues. It’s a bit of a vicious circle as well because hormonal imbalance then makes it harder for you to lose weight, so you end up in that situation where you seem to be on a permanent diet but your body resists all your attempts to shake the excess weight off and you never seem to lose weight.
The four phases of the diet
Phase 1
You will gently detoxify your body for two days.Phase 2
This phase of the diet will last for a minimum of two weeks and a maximum of four. Your body will begin to adjust to the new, healthy nutrition. Clients often see improvements in energy as well as weight loss during this early phase of the diet.Phase 3
Food items so far excluded from your diet plan can now be introduced, during this phase clients report further improvements in well-being, increased energy and weight loss.Phase 4
This phase is indefinite and commences at the point that you’ve decided you are happy with how much weight you’ve lost and with your health and well-being. You will continue to follow the basic rules of the diet to maintain a healthy functioning metabolism and be able to maintain your weight.
Who is the programme for?
- Type 2 Diabetes
- Rheumatism
- Migraines
- High blood pressure
- Fatigue
- High cholesterol
- Osteoporosis
- Menopause and related symptoms
- Allergies
- PCOS
- Hypodthyroidism
How does Metabolic Balance® work?
Metabolic Balance® works by adjusting your individual body chemistry to re-balance hormone levels, thus promoting fat burning, decrease fat storage, help to promote “anti-ageing and generally making you feel healthier”.*
Why is this diet different from other diets?
Metabolic Balance® re-balances hormone levels, which in turn helps burn fat more effectively, decrease fat storage and consequently results in weight loss. The following factors make Metabolic balance different from other diets.
1. Your diet plan is unique to you and taken from your personal data and blood values, so no two plans are the same. It is your metabolic “fingerprint”.
2. There is no yo-yo effect as can be experienced on many other diets. Once your metabolism has been reprogrammed, long term weight loss can be maintained by following some basic rules.
3. Only body fat is lost, not lean tissue and muscle and often this can result in a complete transformation of body composition, in other words a change of shape.
4. The Science behind Metabolic Balance® is backed by over 20 years of research by German Physicians and Nutritionists.
5. It is tried and tested, with over 250,000 plans produced for clients based all around the world.
6. Metabolic Balance is a 100% all natural programme, using delicious, healthy everyday foods found in your local supermarket!

*After struggling for many years with my diet and managing the various symptoms of PCOS, I found that no matter how much I exercised or seemed to control my diet, I was heavier than I should have been. I was also managing the other symptoms of PCOS such a terrible heavy painful, periods, mood swings, bloating, IBS and, general fatigue to name a few.
After numerous trips to my local GP where I told of the various deficiencies I had, I was just prescribed the usual supplements, but not given clear direction as to how I would move forward. The turning point came when I stopped being able to carry out daily everyday tasks and whilst functioning properly I found that my energy levels were at an unexplainable low no matter how much sleep I was getting.
I researched online and found The Nutritional Therapy Clinic. I went in for an initial appointment, was sent for full blood tests and was surprised and happy with the thorough analysis and information I received. Emma was great; really informative, clear and knowledgeable about what was causing my chronic fatigue and inability to function properly.
Emma proposed that I try the Metabolic Balance diet. I was incredibly skeptical when she showed me the plan. Also, as a boxing coach, I was very used to training at a high intensity, however, I found that training in this way also left me needing a number of days to recover. The plan was amazing! It involved some serious adjustments and also a new approach to food and exercise which took me some weeks to adapt, it also made me look at my lifestyle and address some key imbalances. It truly has been amazing. It also enabled me to lose 9kilos!
I am really happy with the results and would highly recommend Emma and the Nutritional Therapy Clinic to anyone who has any nutritional and health issues.”

I was particularly interested to receive my blood test results and the resulting programme. I loved the food on my Metabolic Balance personal programme and found I was enjoying creating my own recipes from the list, for example, my own hummus and salmon or tuna dips. My family also enjoyed eating these foods with me.
The programme is so easy to follow and I’ve learned so much about myself and which foods are best for me. The weight has come off easily. I now weigh under 11 stone and all the niggling health problems that I had when I first went to see Emma have gone, such as aching joints and mood swings.*
Now I am a healthy weight for my height, Metabolic Balance has certainly changed my life and vastly improved my health. Thank you Emma!” Amanda

*I have seen around 5 nutritionists since the age of 18 (I’m now 30)and none of them could help me solve my weight issues. I have tried every diet under the sun everything from the GI to the Lemon juice diet, however it was the last straw when another diet I was on gave me a bowel condition and put me on antibiotic’s for 5 weeks, which then led to a huge amount of allergies. That was the point when I had well and truly hit a wall, as I thought I would be stuck with these allergies and problems forever.
I found The Nutritional Therapy Clinic online and decided to give the Metabolic Balance diet a try, as I needed specialist help. I was very skeptical of the diet at first but Emma’s approach and brilliant coaching helped tremendously and as the days went on I began to really appreciate her coaching and also the brilliantly designed metabolic balance plan itself.
To be honest, it has changed my life. Not only am I steadily loosing weight but my whole body is beginning to get back into balance, shape and also some of my allergies are disappearing!* Rebekah
I met Emma, but was very apprehensive about the Metabolic Balance program – I didn’t think I could do it as it seemed very regulated, the daily weighings seemed like a mountain to climb and I didn’t think the quantities were enough not to feel hungry.
Within a couple of weeks all the above mentioned symptoms had started to disappear. I felt my old energy levels returning, my anxiety receding, and my positive outlook on life resurging. In a word, I was getting reconnected with my old SELF! And the feeling was indescribable!
I also lost 13kg (28.7lb) in 2 months, shedding the extra centimeters without any effort! Although since then I have not been able to continue with the plan religiously due to intensive traveling for the past 2 months, I have lost a further 3kgs!* It is so well tailored to my body’s needs and provides me with all the necessary nutrition so that I don’t get hungry and have no cravings! I now know what’s good for me and health now being high on my agenda, I will always keep my MB plan in mind and act upon it in order not to end up in the desperate situation Emma first found me in. It’s good to feel good about oneself!”
I have been on the metabolic balance diet for 12 weeks now. I have lost 15 ½ pounds, I am full of energy and my skin glows.* I am on phase 3 and I plan to continue with it. It is not difficult to adhere to it and Emma is very supportive and encouraging. It is the first time in my life that I have been able to stick with a diet and this is due to the fact that I enjoy what I am eating and most important that I do not feel hungry. My cravings have gone and as a medical doctor I can see that the diet is based on stabilising my blood sugar levels. I fully recommend the diet and most of all Emma who is very experienced and comes with nice alternative meal /food ideas to suit everyone.” Kohar
To say that the MB method of eating was perfect for me is a serious understatement and with Emma’s direction it took me just over 3 months (including the Christmas/New Year period) to lose considerably more than I thought I ever could (3.5 stone & 3 dress sizes to be precise). What’s even better is that it has all gone from the problem places – hips, waist and thighs – so that I am now the same size I was when I was 20!* Even better, when losing weight at 50 you tend to get gaunt around your face but this has not happened at all!
I have never been hungry, having managed to rid myself of my sugar cravings almost immediately I started the MB diet and yet now that I am in Maintenance I find I can eat a little of anything I used to eat without craving more. Emma’s guidance on how to mix and match food allowances and her very timely and patient responses to endless questions from me have made the whole process very straight forward. The only problem is I need a new wardrobe!! or can that really be called a ‘problem’?
At first I was very apprehensive about the Metabolic Balance program, as it seemed very strict and regimented. With Christmas around the corner everyone was telling not to start the program until the New Year. The thought however of possibly gaining more weight during the holidays made me even more determined to go on the plan straight away in the hope of maybe losing a couple of kilos before the festive season began.
I started the program in early December. The first 2-3 days were really hard, but even though the portions seemed small I didn’t feel hungry. Emma was very supportive. She emailed me great tips just before Christmas, on what to eat when going out so I didn’t feel I was missing out on anything. Having one treat meal a week allowed me to enjoy my Christmas lunch, desserts and all!
By that time, only 3 weeks into the program I’d lost 6kg and an amazing 11.5cm from my waist alone! Up to now, I have lost nearly 12kg and I feel and look great.* I try not to think of the M.B. program as a diet, but continue following the basic ‘rules’ of the plan as a way of life! Chrysa

Frequently Asked Questions
General
How is the Metabolic Balance programme prescribed?
Once you have selected your Metabolic Balance coach, you will be supervised and supported through the 4 phases of the programme. On your 1st consultation your coach will compile your health & medical history and arrange for your blood sample to be taken. Once the blood analysis is completed the results and health information are gathered and analysed at the institute where your individual nutrition plan will be generated.
How long does the programme last?
There are four phases:
Phase 1 – A two day preparation and detoxification process.
Phase 2 – A 14 day strict adjustment phase where you will be required to eat 3 meals daily following 8 simple rules. You will be supported and closely monitored by your Coach.
Phase 3 – A more relaxed adjustment phase where you begin to incorporate additional foods into your daily meal plan. You may also choose to join in on special occasions and savour a glass of wine or two!! Your Coach continues to support and monitor your progress.
Phase 4 – A maintenance phase where you continue to apply the core principles and enjoy a lifestyle that embraces balance and well-being.
Can I also participate in the Metabolic Balance programme without any coaching?
No, you need to participate in this programme with the guidance and support of a certified metabolic balance® Coach. The Coach will fully engage and support you along the way, they have the specialised knowledge and experience to help you overcome any obstacles and will prove to be a vital element in your success.
I am on the move the whole day, can I still participate in the programme?
Yes, your meal plan is so versatile that you can plan well ahead and organise every day individually. Your Metabolic Balance® Coach supports and guides you in ideas to create interesting and tasty dishes.
Why is it so important to observe the 5 hour fast between meals?
Your body needs adequate time and rest for the digestion of meals. Snacks, often disturb this metabolic process and bring about the all too familiar cravings and hunger attacks caused by blood-sugar imbalances. Also, snacking interferes with the fat-burning process, so it is vital to consistently observe the 5 hour pauses between meals during this time.
Do I have to continue eating as I did in the strict adjustment phase?
No, after your metabolism has adjusted to your new eating habits and you have reached your goals, you enter phase 4 where you may ease off slightly and maintain the success you have achieved. However, some basic rules still apply that have become familiar to you and like many participants before you, you will notice which foods are good for you and which foods are not. If at any point you find yourself relapsing you simply revert to the strict adjustment phase to get yourself back on track.
Phase 1
If I go for a vegetable / fruit day – is it only fruit / vegetables from my list?
On the fruit and veg day you can have any not just the ones on your plan. Phase 1 has nothing to do with your food list.
I’m a bit confused on the weights for each meal on phase 1 – is this right? 1kg divided by 3 = 0.33 kilograms meal / 1.5kg divided by 3 = 0.5 kilograms per meal
Days 1 and 2 you can graze if you like, the 3 meals and 5 hrs kick in from day 3.
Phase 2
In my list of fruit, vegetables and salad, garlic is not mentioned. I assume I cannot have it?
You can have any natural herbs and spices including garlic, chilli, lemon grass, ginger, coriander etc.
Phase 2 and 3
A question on bread, you noted 75g and 30g in pen next to bread, does this mean a max of 75g in a day and max of 30g per meal? I have been eating for now a slice of 30g in the morning and 1 rye crispbread (10g) per meal.
It’s either 75g bread or 30g crackers or a mixture with 25g bread being equal to 10g of crackers.
With the rye bread is it 30g per portion and 75g per one sitting?
It’s 75g per day, split between meals or all at once if you want.
Is it right that wherever it lists vegetables or salad on the meal plan they are interchangeable?
Yes.
Gherkins are on my vegetable list provided they are sugar free. Can you recommend any sugar free brands?
There are a few via Ocado Delivery or health food shops such as Wholefoods etc.
I thought feta cheese was okay but I don’t see it on my Cheese list?
If you have goats or sheep’s cheese on your list then feta is fine.
For lunch can I mix fish with veg instead of salad?
Yes veg/salad are the same group you can mix them as much as you like.
