Fertility

Statistics show that the number of couples experiencing fertility problems is on the increase. The study of fertility nutrition has advanced significantly, but sperm counts are dropping by up to 50%, sperm abnormalities are increasing, more women are experiencing miscarriage and approximately 30% of couples are told that they have ‘unexplained infertility’. Seeing one of our fertility nutritionists in London can help you make changes to your nutrition, which in turn can increase your fertility and your chances of conceiving.

There is a great deal that can be done to improve your fertility and chance of conceiving with changes to your diet and nutrition, the addition of supplements and altering your lifestyle.

For example some nutrients can have the following affects:

  • Certain fats can help balance hormone levels
  • Some foods can improve the quality of a woman’s eggs
  • Zinc can increase sperm count and reduce miscarriages
  • Antioxidants can help protect against birth defects and miscarriage
  • Some vitamins increase sperm quality and prevent clumping or sticking together of sperm
  • Other nutrients can increase the flow of blood to the uterus, which  helps to provide a more fertile environment for the embryo to grow and develop

It is just as important to make lifestyle changes as well as improvements to your diet, as smoking, drinking, being overweight, recreational drugs and stress can all have an impact on your chance of conceiving.

It takes approximately 3 – 4 months for both the egg and the sperm to develop and mature, therefore we recommend that couples follow a nutritional programme for the same amount of time, prior to trying to conceive, as this provide the best chance of conception.*

To check for any nutrient imbalances or deficiencies we may also recommend some simple non-invasive tests.
