Seasonal veg is good for you, try cabbage at Christmas

There are good reasons for eating seasonal food and here’s an excellent example. December is a good time for cabbage. Cabbage is part of the brassica family, which also includes cauliflower, broccoli, kale, Brussels sprouts and watercress. They are a liver-friendly bunch that aid detoxication, ideal for the festive season. Packed with vitamin C and vitamin K, they also contain folate, manganese and small amounts of B6, calcium, potassium and thiamine. Add to this  the impressive list of antioxidants brassica’s also contain, such as choline, beta-carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin, quercetin, kaempferol and apigenin and it’s quite a healthy cocktail and especially beneficial at a time of year when you might over-indulge.

Studies have found cabbage to both prevent cancer, and to protect from radiation therapy. It can also have a beneficial effect on the immune, digestive and cardiovascular systems due to the high volume of fibre. This inexpensive vegetable is often overlooked and sometimes feared by people who have experienced it being cooked to death. If that’s you, don’t miss out of the health benefits any longer! Try cabbage chopped finely and lightly stir-fried with a pinch of caraway seeds and lots of lemon juice. Make a delicious coleslaw with apple and carrots to liven up your lunch or gently steam and add a little salt and black pepper to taste.
